A forest fire broke out on a clear-cut near Lamborn in Falu municipality on Monday. Rescue services used two helicopters to drop water and personnel from four fire stations took part in the effort. The fire, covering 150 by 300 metres, was under control after several hours.
The alarm for the forest fire came in to SOS at 14:31 on Monday. The fire started on a clear-cut near Lamborn in Falu municipality and covered an area of 150 by 300 metres.
Strong winds and difficult terrain hampered the firefighting efforts, according to rescue leader Johan Melin. "It is extremely difficult terrain and there is a lot of fuel on the ground," he says.
Two helicopters were used to water-bomb the area, while personnel from four fire stations worked on site. At around 19:00, Melin reported that the fire was surrounded. "We believe we have surrounded the entire fire and now we are extinguishing it, so there is no spread right now," he says.
Melin fears more similar fires in storm-damaged areas where branches remain after clearing. "This is a huge concern. It is extremely dry in the top layer of the terrain, which makes it very flammable," he explains. Rescue services also warn of risks in the area, such as falling trees. SMHI warns of high or very high risk for grass fires in northern Svealand and snow-free parts of Norrland.
