Guardians promote prospect Cooper Ingle to majors

The Cleveland Guardians have called up catcher Cooper Ingle from Triple-A Columbus for his first major league opportunity. The 24-year-old prospect is set to make his MLB debut as the designated hitter on Friday against the Seattle Mariners.

Ingle, ranked as the Guardians' No. 3 prospect, earned the promotion after a strong season with Columbus. In 51 games he posted a .284/.416/.551 slash line along with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs.

The move comes as Cleveland deals with multiple injuries. José Ramírez, Angel Martínez and Chase DeLauter are all on the 10-day injured list after suffering fractures on June 13. The team has averaged just 3.44 runs per game without them and ranks 29th in the majors in June scoring.

To add Ingle, the Guardians designated outfielder Stuart Fairchild for assignment. Ingle has begun playing left field in recent weeks to increase his versatility, though he will start Friday's game at designated hitter.

Guardians assistant general manager James Harris noted the team is focused on developing Ingle's skills at multiple positions while he adjusts to the major leagues.
