Hong Kong police arrested a 62-year-old local man on Friday after airport security staff discovered an extendable baton in his checked suitcase bound for the United States.
A police spokesman said: “Preliminary investigations showed that the man had hidden a suspected extendable baton, an unauthorised weapon, in his checked suitcase.”
This marks the second discovery of an unauthorised weapon in airline baggage this week. The man has been released on bail as the Airport Police District’s crime squad continues its investigation. A source familiar with the matter said the man was a transit passenger.
The force warned that while some passengers might attempt to take extendable batons or pepper spray overseas, these items are classified as unauthorised weapons and cannot be brought onto flights.
