Hong Kong man arrested after car fatally hits 94-year-old pedestrian

Hong Kong police have arrested a 32-year-old man after his car struck a 94-year-old pedestrian early on Wednesday, who later died in hospital. The incident occurred on Tam Kon Chau Road towards Yuen Long near Mai Po. The driver is suspected of dangerous driving causing death.

At 4.06am on Wednesday, a car travelling on Tam Kon Chau Road towards Yuen Long in Hong Kong's New Territories North struck a 94-year-old pedestrian near Mai Po close to the border. The elderly man suffered multiple injuries and was rushed to Prince of Wales Hospital in Sha Tin, where he was certified dead at 7.37am.

Police arrested the 32-year-old driver on suspicion of dangerous driving causing death and he remains in custody for questioning. The case is under investigation by the New Territories North Special Investigation Team. Authorities are urging witnesses to call 36613858 with any information.

Under Hong Kong law, the maximum penalty for dangerous driving causing death is a fine of HK$50,000 and up to 10 years' imprisonment. This incident underscores road safety concerns, particularly for pedestrians in border areas during early morning hours.
