Illinois man charged in prolonged girlfriend beating

Johnnie Chiaravalle, 21, faces charges of aggravated domestic battery after allegedly beating his girlfriend for eight to nine hours in Peoria, Illinois. The victim escaped when he fell asleep and sought help at a community center. Police arrested Chiaravalle following the discovery of evidence at their home.

On Monday, officers responded to the East Bluff Community Center in Peoria, where a woman reported being attacked by her boyfriend, Johnnie Chiaravalle. She described suffering beatings to her face, head, and body over eight to nine hours, including strangulation and knives thrown at her legs, which fractured her nose and caused cuts and lacerations. Her eyes were nearly swollen shut, with bruising across her face and body, according to the Peoria Police Department. She had been prevented from leaving their home until Chiaravalle fell asleep, allowing her escape, the Peoria County State's Attorney's Office announced in charging him with two counts of aggravated domestic battery, plus domestic battery and unlawful restraint. He remains in custody ahead of a May 13 arraignment. Chiaravalle told officers he had been asleep and suggested someone else caused her injuries. At the home, police found clumps of the victim's hair, red blood-like stains on the floor, and multiple knives. The victim was hospitalized Tuesday with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
