Immigration crackdown linked to rising mental health issues

A Los Angeles clinic has documented sharp increases in anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts among immigrant patients since federal enforcement actions intensified in 2025. Zocalo Health, which serves Latino families on Medicaid, attributes the trend to the ongoing immigration crackdown under the Trump administration. The findings highlight a growing public health concern in affected communities.

Zocalo Health screens all patients for mental health conditions using standardized tools. Data collected since raids began in the Los Angeles area last year show more than half of screened patients experiencing severe anxiety that interferes with daily life. Nearly three quarters reported depression, while one in eight struggled with suicidal thoughts, more than double the rate in the general population.

A new POLITICO poll conducted with Public First finds that about half of Americans describe President Donald Trump’s immigration enforcement approach as “too aggressive,” a level broadly similar to earlier polling referenced by the outlet. The findings underscore the political risks for Republicans as immigration crackdowns spark backlash in some communities and demands for escalation from parts of the right.

Five months after the Trump administration paused immigration processing from high-risk countries following a deadly D.C. shooting, the policy—now covering 39 nations—has stranded thousands already in the U.S. in legal limbo, facing job losses, stalled careers, and deportation fears. Personal stories highlight hardship, while lawsuits yield court orders for relief.

A coalition of President Donald Trump's allies has formed to pressure the administration into resuming mass deportations of all unauthorized immigrants, not just violent criminals. This push comes amid a reported shift in White House messaging following controversial ICE operations. Meanwhile, Democratic-led cities in Republican states debate how to limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
