In Rennes, parents threaten teacher over gender separation

In Rennes, parents threatened a male teacher over their daughter's education, demanding a female instructor. The director of Clôteaux nursery school has been on sick leave for over a month. A strike is planned for Friday in front of the school.

On October 10, parents arrived at Clôteaux nursery school in southern Rennes to threaten the male teacher instructing their daughter. They refuse a man teaching their child, demanding a female teacher. These 'serious threats,' according to the educational team, were accompanied by 'statements amounting to sexist outrage, defamation, and contempt'.

The school's director, who is also the teacher involved, has been on sick leave for over a month. It is not about accusations of mistreatment or pedophilia, the staff emphasizes, but a refusal for men to perform the same tasks as women.

A major mobilization is scheduled for this Friday in front of the school, called by teachers and the FO union. 'Other schools will probably also go on strike, as well as territorial agents,' warns Fabrice Lerestif, FO general secretary for Ille-et-Vilaine. 'Because we have other signals of the same kind, in other contexts. All this must not be trivialized'.

This incident raises questions about secularism and equality in French education, with no further details on the family or investigation available.
