Indiana man sentenced to 62 years for roommate's murder

James Grossnickle, 54, received a 62-year prison sentence for murdering his roommate Craig Esmon Jacobs in Indianapolis. The killing occurred in September 2024, with Grossnickle shooting Jacobs multiple times in the face before locking his body in a bedroom. Marion County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Marchal imposed the sentence this week following convictions for murder and unlawful firearm possession.

James Grossnickle shot and killed 40-year-old Craig Esmon Jacobs at his residence on South Gray Street in early September 2024. Witnesses reported that Grossnickle had threatened Jacobs, saying he would shoot him in the head and send body parts to his family in a bag. Friends grew concerned after Jacobs went missing and broke into his locked bedroom on September 4, discovering his body with multiple facial gunshot wounds, indicating he had been dead for some time. They called the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, which responded to the scene. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police arrested Grossnickle later that day on East Edgewood Avenue after reports of an armed suspect. Officers found the murder weapon in his vehicle. During interrogation, Grossnickle admitted shooting Jacobs several times in the head until his gun jammed, then screwing the bedroom door shut to conceal the body. A jury convicted him in March of murder and unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon. Judge Jeffrey Marchal sentenced Grossnickle to 62 years in prison this week. Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears stated, 'The jury found the truth the defendant attempted to hide, and today the court reinforced that truth with a sentence that reflects the weight of his crimes.' Mears added that Grossnickle will spend the rest of his life in prison.
