J.T. Poston captured the Memorial Tournament title with a birdie on the 18th hole to force a playoff, then defeated Ryan Gerard on the second extra hole at Muirfield Village.
Poston entered the final round with a four-shot lead but dropped several strokes with bogeys on holes 3, 9, 12 and 13. He recovered with birdies on 14, 15 and 18 to tie Gerard at the end of regulation. In the playoff, both players parred the first trip down the 18th. On the second extra hole, Gerard three-putted from 53 feet while Poston made his 3-footer for par to secure the victory. Jack Nicklaus, the tournament host and course designer, had earlier noted that Muirfield Village rewards patience over power. Poston echoed that theme afterward, telling CBS, “A lot of holes. A lot of grit.” The win marks Poston’s first PGA Tour title at the prestigious event.
