Jeff Kent has been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame by the Contemporary Baseball Era Committee, receiving 14 of 16 votes announced Sunday at the MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando. The former second baseman, known for his power hitting, will join the Class of 2026 after topping out at 46.5% in BBWAA voting. Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens each received fewer than five votes, making them ineligible for the next ballot until 2031.
The Contemporary Baseball Era Committee, a 16-member panel of Hall of Famers, executives, and media members, voted on eight candidates whose primary contributions came since 1980. Kent, 57, needed 12 votes for induction and surpassed that threshold with 14. The committee included Hall of Famers Fergie Jenkins, Jim Kaat, Juan Marichal, Tony Perez, Ozzie Smith, Alan Trammell, and Robin Yount; executives Mark Attanasio, Doug Melvin, Arte Moreno, Kim Ng, Tony Reagins, and Terry Ryan; and media/historians Steve Hirdt, Tyler Kepner, and Jayson Stark.
Kent played 17 seasons across six teams, batting .290/.356/.500 with a 123 OPS+ over 2,461 hits, 560 doubles, 377 home runs, 1,518 RBI, 1,320 runs, and 55.4 WAR. He holds the all-time record for home runs by a second baseman with 377, ranking third in RBI and 19th in WAR at the position. His peak came with the San Francisco Giants from 1997-2002, where he posted 31.6 WAR, won the 2000 NL MVP (.334/.424/.596, 33 HR, 125 RBI), and earned three All-Star nods and three Silver Sluggers. Kent also won a Silver Slugger with the Dodgers in 2005 and was a five-time All-Star overall.
After 10 years on the BBWAA ballot, Kent's support never exceeded 46.5% in 2023, often cited for defensive shortcomings despite his offensive prowess. He hinted at preferring a Giants cap on his plaque, citing 'great moments in the Bay Area with those fans,' though a blank cap is possible given his time with other teams like the Mets (five seasons) and Dodgers (four).
Carlos Delgado received nine votes, while Dale Murphy and Don Mattingly each got six. Bonds, Kent's former Giants teammate, Roger Clemens, Gary Sheffield, and Fernando Valenzuela received fewer than five votes each. A new rule bars candidates with under five votes from the 2028 ballot, pushing their next chance to 2031; another sub-five-vote showing would end eligibility. Kent will be inducted July 26, 2026, in Cooperstown alongside BBWAA selections announced January 20.
