Chelsea legend John Terry has opened up about his severe mental health struggles following his missed penalty in the 2008 UEFA Champions League final against Manchester United. The former defender revealed suicidal thoughts in the aftermath of the shootout loss at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Terry credits teammates' intervention for helping him through one of the darkest periods of his life.
John Terry, now 45, shared his emotional turmoil on Reece Mennie’s podcast, describing the immediate aftermath of the 2008 UEFA Champions League final as profoundly distressing. During the match against Manchester United at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Terry slipped while attempting what could have been the decisive penalty, striking the post and contributing to Chelsea's loss in the shootout.
Returning to the team hotel, Terry found himself alone on the 25th floor, overwhelmed by disbelief. “I remember after the game we all went back to the hotel. I was on the 25th floor in Moscow, just looking out the window and asking myself, ‘Why? Why?’” he recounted. “I’m not saying I would have jumped, but those thoughts do go through your head at moments like that.”
Teammates soon checked on him and pulled him from the room, an act Terry now views as crucial. “It’s those ‘what if?’ moments,” he added. “You just never know.” The pain extended to his return to the England squad days later, where facing Manchester United players intensified his regret. Shortly after, scoring against the United States brought mixed feelings: “I remember thinking, ‘Why couldn’t I just swap that goal for that penalty?’”
In retirement, without the distraction of weekly matches, the memory resurfaces more intensely. “Now I’m retired and don’t have that weekly focus or the buzz of playing in front of supporters, it hits me more,” Terry said. “I still wake up in the middle of the night and remember it happened. I don’t think it will ever completely go away.”
Terry found partial closure in 2012 when Chelsea won the Champions League on penalties against Bayern Munich. Though suspended for the final due to a red card in the semi-final against Barcelona, he celebrated with the squad that lifted the trophy.
