Junior Caminero announced his participation in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby on Tuesday while extending his home run streak to five games.
The Tampa Bay Rays third baseman went deep for the fifth straight game on Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium. His three-run homer in the third inning off starter Noah Cameron traveled a Statcast-projected 438 feet.
Caminero committed earlier that day to the event scheduled for July 13 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The 22-year-old, who finished second to Cal Raleigh last year, said his goal is to become champion.
He leads the American League in Phase 2 All-Star balloting for the starting third base spot. Caminero has hit eight home runs in his past seven games and entered Tuesday with a .292/.384/.548 slash line and 22 homers in 81 games this season.
