In the ongoing 2023-2024 Hajj quota corruption case, Indonesia's KPK has received about Rp100 billion in returned funds from hajj bureaus and plans to recover more. This follows the January 8 naming of former Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas and aide Ishfah Abidal Aziz (Gus Alex) as suspects.

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is pressing hajj associations and travel bureaus to return funds tied to irregularities in the Ministry of Religious Affairs' allocation of 20,000 additional Hajj quotas from Saudi Arabia. KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo said returns have reached Rp100 billion as of January 9, 2026, with more expected.

"It has reached around Rp100 billion at present and will continue to grow," Budi stated at KPK headquarters in Jakarta.

The case involves splitting the quotas 50:50 between regular and special Hajj, violating Law No. 8/2019, which caps special quotas at 8%. Initial state losses exceed Rp1 trillion. Building on prior examinations and probes starting August 2025, Yaqut and Gus Alex were named suspects yesterday for unlawful quota decisions and alleged fund flows.

The DPR's Hajj Inquiry Committee noted similar issues in 2024 Hajj organization. Yaqut's East Jakarta home is under security, and his lawyer Mellisa Anggraini affirmed cooperation: "We fully respect the ongoing legal process."
