KPop Demon Hunters writers to script Tim Burton's Fifty Foot Woman remake

Screenwriters Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, known for the hit animated film KPop Demon Hunters, have been hired to write the screenplay for Tim Burton's reimagining of the 1958 classic Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. Warner Bros. Pictures is producing the project, with Burton directing and producing alongside others. The news was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, the writing duo behind Sony Animation and Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters, are set to pen the screenplay for Tim Burton's update to Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman. The project, announced in 2024, reimagines the 1958 science-fiction horror film about a wealthy heiress who grows to giant size after an alien encounter and seeks revenge on her unfaithful husband.

Burton, famed for directing Beetlejuice and The Nightmare Before Christmas, will helm the remake and produce it with Andrew Mittman and Tommy Harper. An earlier script version was written by Gillian Flynn. LuckyChap Entertainment, led by Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley, and Josey McNamara, is also producing, with Morgan Begg overseeing development and Kai Dolbashian as executive producer.

Jimenez and McMechan earned recognition on Variety's 10 Screenwriters to Watch for 2025 following KPop Demon Hunters, which they co-wrote with director Maggie Kang. The duo met at Loyola Marymount University and developed their script through the Sundance Feature Lab after an approach from screenwriter Nicole Perlman.

"We started writing that in 2020 during the pandemic," Jimenez told Variety. "At first, we were like, ‘This is going to be the biggest movie ever, and then as time passed, we were like, ‘Maybe it won’t get made. Who knows?’ And then we were on set this summer and the trailer dropped and we were shocked."

McMechan added: "This was truly the first time where there was all this manpower behind it, and it felt like it was on track to being made."

Released last summer, KPop Demon Hunters became Netflix's most-watched film ever, with its songs setting Billboard 200 records. It is nominated for three Golden Globes: best animated motion picture, best original song, and cinematic and box office achievement.

The writers are represented by WME and Mosaic.
