The Labor Ministry announced it will file a new Labor Statute on July 20 to replace the 1950 Substantive Labor Code. Minister Antonio Sanguino made the announcement during a hearing in Bogotá.
The announcement took place on May 26 during a public labor hearing at the headquarters of the Asociación Distrital de Trabajadores y Trabajadoras de la Educación in southern Bogotá. Viceminister Sandra Muñoz, union leaders and citizens attended.
Sanguino said these hearings let workers discuss their rights with the Ministry and set priorities for labor conflicts. Groups including CUT, CTC and ADE highlighted the Labor Reform and Pension Reform.
The CGT raised cases of alleged labor rights violations. The Ministry pledged to conduct inspections and start sanction procedures where warranted. Sanguino reaffirmed that the Ministry represents Colombia's workers.
