Law & Order: SVU renewed for season 28

NBC has renewed Law & Order: Special Victims Unit for a 28th season. Mariska Hargitay will continue in her long-running role as Detective Olivia Benson.

The series has featured Hargitay since its debut in 1999. Showrunner Michele Fazekas confirmed that Hargitay will appear in every episode of the new season.

"In the new season, we can be strategic about how we don't have everybody for every single episode — except for Mariska, obviously," Fazekas told TVLine.

Before SVU, Hargitay starred in the 1986 CBS series Downtown as parolee Jesse Smith. The one-season show marked her first regular television role and was followed by other short-lived police dramas.
