Lechería-AIFA train will miss Semana Santa deadline, Sheinbaum says

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a one-week delay in the Lechería-AIFA train inauguration due to safety tests. Originally promised before Easter week, it now targets March 29 or possibly April 6. Aesthetic improvements are also underway along the route.

The Aeropuerto Internacional Felipe Ángeles (AIFA) in Zumpango, Estado de México, has operated for nearly four years without a mass transit option for passengers. President Claudia Sheinbaum had promised the Lechería-AIFA train would be ready before Easter week, but during Tuesday's morning briefing, she acknowledged an unavoidable delay due to safety tests and final rail checks. “We have a one-week difference, I asked them to be ready by March 29, maybe it's April 6. They're reviewing, they have a point obviously, it's all the train's safety, they're finishing the tests,” Sheinbaum stated. She also noted aesthetic works: “We're doing beautification along the train to improve the entire Lechería-AIFA train environment.”The train's route will share tracks and a main station with the Tren Suburbano, linking Buenavista in Mexico City to Cuautitlán. The Secretaría de la Defensa Nacional (Sedena) will operate the Buenavista-AIFA link. The federal government, through the Fondo Nacional de Desarrollo de Infraestructura (Fonadin), plans to acquire the Tren Suburbano concession, currently held by Ferrocarriles Suburbanos, a subsidiary of Spain's CAF. This will expand operations via the Defense-controlled Tren Maya paraestatal, increasing Fonadin's footprint in rail services.

The US Department of Transportation revoked approval for 13 routes operated by Mexican airlines to its territory, accusing Mexico of violating the bilateral aviation agreement through decrees that reduced operations at AICM and banned cargo flights there. The measure, effective from November 7 for some routes, impacts Viva Aerobus, Aeroméxico, and Volaris, and could lead to a loss of 202,500 US tourists and 266 million dollars in the winter season. President Claudia Sheinbaum rejected the decision, defending Mexican sovereignty.

Starting Monday, February 9, the Mexico City Metro's Line 2 will begin remodeling works on 16 stations, altering hours at San Antonio Abad, Chabacano, and Viaducto. Service will split into two circuits, with free RTP bus service to ease disruptions. The project prepares the city for the 2026 World Cup.

Andrés Conesa, CEO of Aeroméxico, reiterated that building a third terminal at Mexico City's International Airport (AICM) is essential to expand capacity in the Valley of Mexico to 100 million passengers annually, combining AICM, AIFA, and Toluca. Conesa acknowledged ongoing works at AICM ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup and avoided commenting on proposals for a single airport in Texcoco. Experts warn that the current system is inefficient, with saturated skies and rising operational costs.
