Logistical issues delay evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from South Africa

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has postponed the evacuation of its nationals from South Africa by a few days. The delay stems from legal and logistical requirements. More than 800 Ghanaians had registered to return home.

Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the planned evacuation of nationals from South Africa, originally set to start on Thursday, has been deferred. Officials cited the need for mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits as the main reasons.

More than 800 Ghanaians registered with the High Commission in Pretoria to seek return. The ministry stated that the process will now take place in a few days.

The postponement comes after recent protests against undocumented immigrants in parts of South Africa. In Durban, authorities have begun checking the status of foreign nationals at the Diakonia Centre who left their homes over safety concerns.
