Los domingos and Sirât lead the nominations for the Goya Awards 2026

The films Los domingos, by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, with 13 nominations, and Sirât, by Oliver Laxe, with 11, top the candidates for the 40th Goya Awards, announced this Tuesday. The ceremony will take place on February 28 in Barcelona, with Rigoberta Bandini and Luis Tosar as hosts. Among the surprises, Romería is left out of the main category despite its nomination in direction.

The Spanish Film Academy revealed this Tuesday the nominations for its 40th Goya Awards, with Los domingos racking up 13 candidacies and Sirât 11, followed by Maspalomas with 9, La cena with 8, and Sorda with 7. In the best film category, Sirât, Los domingos, Maspalomas, La cena, and Sorda compete, surprisingly excluding Romería by Carla Simón, which only got six mentions.

In direction, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa for Los domingos, Oliver Laxe for Sirât, Aitor Arregi and Jose Mari Goenaga for Maspalomas, Carla Simón for Romería, and Albert Serra for the documentary Tardes de soledad are up for the award; it's the first time a documentary director enters this category. Toni Acosta and Arturo Valls read the nominees from the Academy's headquarters.

Los domingos stands out with all its actors nominated: Miguel Garcés and Patricia López Arnaiz as leads, Juan Minujín and Nagore Aranburu in supporting roles, and Blanca Soroa as revelation. In best actor, Manolo Solo for Una quinta portuguesa, Alberto San Juan for La cena, Miguel Garcés, Mario Casas for Muy lejos, and Jose Ramon Soroiz for Maspalomas compete. For actress, Susana Abaitua for Un fantasma en la batalla, Nora Navas for Mi amiga Eva, Antonia Zegers for Los Tortuga, Patricia López Arnaiz, and Ángeles Cervantes for La furia.

Oliver Laxe, from Los Angeles, expressed happiness: “Each culture sees death differently and, therefore, lives my film differently.” Alauda Ruiz de Azúa commented: “I build the films a lot around the actors' work... having almost all of them nominated has made me very happy.” Eva Libertad, from Sorda, celebrated her sister Miriam Garlo's nomination as revelation actress, the first deaf performer to compete.

The gala, on February 28 at Barcelona's Auditori Fòrum, will award the Honor Goya to Gonzalo Suárez. From 218 films released in 2025, 122 are fiction, 87 documentaries, and 9 animations.
