The 79th Cannes Film Festival begins Tuesday with an unprecedented Spanish presence. Three films compete for the Palme d'Or, a first for the event.
Festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux highlighted the diversity of Spanish cinema during his Monday press conference. "Spanish cinema shows a surprising diversity and vitality, as never before," he said.
The films in the official section are Amarga Navidad by Pedro Almodóvar, El ser querido by Rodrigo Sorogoyen and La bola negra by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo. Viva by Aina Clotet screens in Critics' Week.
Frémaux noted that the selection represents three generations of Spanish filmmakers. The festival will also pay tribute to Carlos Saura with a screening of Cría cuervos.
