Marathon players complete fourth ARG puzzle for Cryo Archive

A group of puzzle solvers in the Marathon community has advanced through an alternate reality game (ARG) to unlock the Cryo Archive map. Operating from a dedicated Discord channel, they recently solved the fourth of seven puzzles. This effort highlights the game's engagement with players beyond traditional gameplay.

The ARG within Bungie's extraction shooter Marathon involves seven puzzles that must be solved to access the Cryo Archive zone for all players. Community members, gathered in the Breachers of Tomorrow Discord server within the official Marathon Discord, have just completed the fourth puzzle after overcoming several challenges.

The process began with players searching the game for clues to form a password needed for the Cryo Archive ARG website's index page. This password combined words spoken by the AI Durandal from an earlier ARG step. Following that, participants interacted with hidden terminals in the game displaying mathematical symbols. These symbols were entered into a grid on the ARG website, revealing an image and advancing the puzzle.

The latest breakthrough involved navigating a digital maze without clear guidance. In the early hours of March 13, 2026, a player discovered the correct combination amid looping rooms, completing the fourth step. Trombone, a lead figure in the Breachers of Tomorrow group, described the effort: "The first step took bodies, the second takes brains."

Communication remains a key hurdle, as the global group deals with repeated questions from newcomers to ARGs. Trombone noted, "I love seeing all the new people getting involved with the ARG, and the more people the better, but because of the nature of Discord as a communication tool... we see so many of the same questions."

This ARG draws players in by offering a sense of accomplishment in unlocking new content. As Trombone explained, "Being able to be there when one of the puzzle pieces is put into place... it's not a feeling you can recreate in many other environments." The initiative echoes past Bungie efforts, such as the 2016 Destiny mini-ARG and Halo 2's 'I Love Bees' campaign, fostering community collaboration in the game's lore-rich universe.
