Marine Le Pen calls for TotalEnergies superprofits tax if price cap insufficient

Marine Le Pen, leader of the Rassemblement national, stated that taxing TotalEnergies' superprofits would be necessary if the fuel price cap does not sufficiently protect French purchasing power. TotalEnergies is currently capping unleaded gasoline at 1.99 euros per liter and diesel at 2.09 euros. This measure aims to counter price rises caused by the war in the Middle East.

On Saturday, May 2, 2026, during a walk at the Sens fair in the Yonne department, Marine Le Pen commented on TotalEnergies' initiative. "Total eux-mêmes se rendent compte qu'il faut qu'ils fassent cet effort et ils ont donc décidé de plafonner leurs prix. Moi, la seule chose que je souhaite, c'est que ça bénéficie au pouvoir d'achat des Français et après on fera les comptes," she stated.

She added: "Entre la proposition que nous avons faite (la taxation) et le fait qu'ils plafonnent les prix, nous verrons si effectivement ça correspond à la contribution que nous souhaitons obtenir." Marine Le Pen denied engaging in "Total bashing," calling the company a "champion national" of which "on est très fier."

Last Wednesday, she had deemed it "normal" to tax TotalEnergies' superprofits, which saw net profits jump 51% in the first quarter due to price hikes from the Middle East war. RN president Jordan Bardella had stated that such a tax was "not the priority."

Marine Le Pen reaffirmed no economic divergences within RN with Bardella. She renewed her call to cut fuel taxes, proposing a VAT reduction from 20% to 5.5%. In Sens, she was greeted by supporters but also a hostile demonstration demanding her court appearance.

Gasoline prices reached their highest level since the start of the Middle East conflict on Wednesday, May 6. The average price of super unleaded 95 stood at 2.03 euros per liter. The increase stems from the war and the paralysis of the Strait of Hormuz.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has called on TotalEnergies to strengthen its fuel price caps to redistribute its superprofits. The statement comes amid a sharp rise in the group's earnings due to the Middle East conflict. The government is opting for targeted aid amid budget constraints.

Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu warned the Council of Ministers on Wednesday against measures on fuel VAT described as « as demagogic as they are useless ». This comes as oil prices rise over 5% due to the war in the Middle East, already affecting fishermen, farmers, and truckers. He also requested proposals to protect consumers from energy price volatility.

The European Commission, led by Ursula von der Leyen, proposes reducing electricity taxes, reviewing the carbon emissions market, and avoiding premature nuclear plant closures to lower energy prices amid the Middle East war. These measures address surging oil prices due to the Strait of Hormuz closure, costing 6 billion euros since February 28. The EU meanwhile rejects military involvement in the conflict despite pressure from Donald Trump.

The Paris Court of Appeal announced it will deliver its ruling on July 7, 2026, at 1:30 p.m. in the appeal trial of Marine Le Pen and the Rassemblement National (RN) for embezzlement of public funds. This date is pivotal for the RN leader's political future, as she stated she will decide on her 2027 presidential candidacy based on the verdict. If deemed ineligible, Jordan Bardella would be the party's candidate.

Rassemblement national president Jordan Bardella launched the party's municipal campaign on Saturday in Agde and Carcassonne, not ruling out union lists in the second round against the risk of an extreme left victory. He reaffirmed support for Marine Le Pen, on trial in appeal for fake jobs, and said he is preparing to become head of government. These statements come ahead of the March 15 and 22 municipal elections.
