Michael Shannon to lead Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders remake

The Dowdle Brothers are reimagining the 1920 horror classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with Michael Shannon starring as the villainous Doctor Caligari. The project, titled Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders, will launch at the European Film Market in Berlin, fully financed by Anton. Principal photography is set to begin in June 2026.

The upcoming film Doctor Caligari’s Cabinet of Wonders offers a modern psychological horror take on Robert Wiene’s 1920 silent classic, widely regarded as the first true horror movie and a cornerstone of German Expressionist cinema that influenced 1940s and 1950s U.S. film noir.

Directed by John Erick Dowdle from his own screenplay, with producing partner Drew Dowdle, the story centers on Shannon’s character, Doctor Caligari, a traveling mesmerist who controls a sleepwalker and leaves a path of murders across towns. The plot follows a young woman whose boyfriend vanishes, leading her to suspect Caligari, though others dismiss her claims.

John Erick Dowdle, who previously collaborated with Shannon on the Emmy-nominated miniseries Waco, praised the actor’s suitability for the role. “Having worked with Michael Shannon on multiple projects, my brother and I have seen firsthand the unnerving intensity he can bring to even the simplest moments,” Dowdle said. “The idea of seeing him play the horrifying Doctor Caligari became an obsession for us. The trust and creative shorthand we’ve built together will allow us to push deeper and bolder as we reimagine this iconic German Expressionist classic for a modern audience. I couldn’t be more excited to bring this nightmare to life with him.”

Anton is financing the production and managing worldwide sales at the European Film Market, while CAA Media Finance co-represents North American rights. Producers include Sébastien Raybaud and Brandt Wrightsman for Anton, Drew Dowdle for Brothers Dowdle Productions, and Stuart Manashil.

Shannon, known for roles in Man of Steel and Nuremberg, is represented by CAA and Range Media Partners. This project joins Anton’s slate, which features films like My Darling California with Jessica Chastain and Josh Brolin, In Love starring George Clooney and Annette Bening, and the thriller Soon You Will Be Gone and Possibly Eaten with Sophie Wilde.
