Mick Jagger discussed his competitive relationships with David Bowie and John Lennon in a new interview. The Rolling Stones frontman spoke during an appearance on Conan O’Brien’s podcast.
Jagger described Bowie as highly competitive during their time living in New York in the 1980s. He said this prompted a similar response from himself, leading to their 1985 collaboration on “Dancing in the Street.”
The singer recalled telling Bowie that the 1972 single “The Jean Genie” borrowed elements from The Rolling Stones. Bowie responded that it was intended as a homage.
Jagger noted a different form of competition with John Lennon focused on sarcasm and verbal exchanges. He also mentioned following Lennon’s advice against meeting Elvis Presley.
The interview coincided with the recent release of The Rolling Stones’ 25th album, Foreign Tongues.
