Former Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell was admitted to a hospital on Sunday following an unknown medical incident. His spokesman said the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican is receiving excellent care. Details about his condition remain limited.
A spokesman for McConnell, David Popp, confirmed the hospitalization in a statement. "Senator McConnell was admitted to the hospital this morning. He is receiving excellent care," Popp said.
McConnell, a polio survivor, has faced several health challenges in recent years. These include a fall in 2023 that led to a concussion and a separate episode where he froze while speaking to reporters for nearly 30 seconds.
Colleagues expressed support for the senator. Senator Tim Scott said he was lifting McConnell in prayer for a swift recovery and looked forward to seeing him in the Senate halls soon.
McConnell announced in 2025 that he would not seek reelection. His Senate term is set to conclude at the end of this year.
