Motril beach regains blue flag after 38 years

The Poniente beach in Motril, Granada, has regained the blue flag distinction after 38 years without it. The recognition arrives for the 2026 summer season along with 34 other new beaches across Spain.

The Association of Environmental and Consumer Education (Adeac) has updated the list of awarded beaches. Spain will have 677 blue flag beaches this summer, 35 more than the previous year. Andalusia accounts for 143 of these recognitions.

The Poniente beach in Motril flies this flag again for the first time since 1988. Mayor Luisa García Chamorro has highlighted the city council's investment effort. “We have had to wait 38 years to recover this distinction that arrives to demonstrate the important investment effort made by the Motril City Council in its development,” she explained.

The council has invested three million euros over two years in modules, the Coastal Path and other infrastructures. The Granada beach in the same municipality has also obtained the award. This beach, close to the center of Motril, offers space for swimming, beach bars and sports.
