The Grande Dunes Tennis Club in Myrtle Beach faces demolition to make way for a 31-home subdivision. Community members have appealed to city officials to preserve the historic facility designed by Arthur Ashe. The planning commission has already approved the redevelopment plan.
The club, established by the community in the 1960s, features courts originally designed by tennis legend Arthur Ashe. A redevelopment proposal was presented at a recent Myrtle Beach City Council meeting, outlining the removal of the ten-court clay facility.
Community members expressed strong opposition during the process. "It goes even deeper than that — there is a lot of history," said Terry Springs. Another member noted the loss of a place for friendships, family connections, and health activities, while Charles Collins highlighted its longstanding role as a tennis center.
City officials clarified that the decision rests with the private property owner and complies with current zoning. "This is not a decision by the city of Myrtle Beach," they said. The project does not require rezoning or council approval.
More than 500 residents could lose access to a nearby tennis facility if the plan proceeds.
