National Assembly approves revaluation of student scholarships

Deputies approved on Thursday in first reading a bill to automatically index student scholarships to inflation and pay them over twelve months.

The bill, introduced by the GDR group, provides for automatic annual indexation of need-based scholarships, at least to inflation. It also introduces annualization of payments to shift from ten to twelve months.

The measures were adopted almost unanimously by left-wing groups and the Rassemblement National. Deputies from Renaissance, Horizons, LR and UDR abstained, citing an estimated cost of more than 500 million euros to public finances.

The bill must now be examined by the Senate.

The Chamber of Deputies approved the national reconstruction bill promoted by President José Antonio Kast's government. The initiative now heads to the Senate for its second reading after the public account on June 1.

José Antonio Kast's government softened its initial proposals to limit free higher education amid resistance from coalition parties RN and UDI. Instead of an age cap and a four-year moratorium for new institutions, it opted for milder adjustments to economic indicators and a two-year pause. The move aims to ease passage of the Reconstruction Project.
