Perseverance industrial hub near Gqeberha has been chosen for the next phase of a United Nations programme on low-carbon industrial development.
The area on the outskirts of Gqeberha was selected by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation for audits on energy efficiency and optimisation. The study forms part of a global effort to accelerate low-carbon industrial growth.
Business Chamber CEO Denise van Huyssteen said the move would deliver measurable improvements in energy management and position the cluster for future growth. She noted it aligns with efforts to turn industrial areas into eco-industrial parks.
Cluster chairperson Brenton van Vuuren called the selection a significant achievement that affirms progress made through local collaboration. He said it would help address energy insecurity and rising costs.
Dr Gary Koekemoer of the Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa described the initiative as positive, highlighting benefits for carbon reduction and resource stewardship near the Swartkops River estuary.
