North Carolina man arrested after pregnant wife fatally shoots self

A 41-year-old man in North Carolina faces charges after firing a gun at his pregnant wife's feet during an argument, leading to her accidentally shooting herself in the stomach and killing their unborn child. Alfonzo Luis Marcano-Marcano was arrested over the weekend following the incident at their Charlotte home. Authorities have identified him as a member of a Venezuelan gang and he is held on an ICE detainer.

Mint Hill Police responded to Novant Mint Hill Medical Center around 3 a.m. on Sunday after Marcano-Marcano dropped off his pregnant wife with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He had driven away in a red Nissan, according to a probable cause affidavit. The woman was transferred to another hospital, where her unborn child was pronounced dead soon after. The couple had hosted a birthday party at their home in the 10000 block of Stornoway Court the night before. Officers learned from the wife that she had 'accidentally shot herself with a pistol' during the gathering's aftermath. Marcano-Marcano, who waived his Miranda rights, told police that after guests left, he and his wife argued on the back porch. He admitted retrieving a pistol and shooting the ground next to her feet before placing it on the porch rail. His wife then grabbed the weapon to secure it, as he had been drinking, and accidentally pulled the trigger while trying to pocket it, the affidavit states. She later confirmed he had shot at her feet. Marcano-Marcano also said he returned home after the drop-off and threw the pistol into nearby woods. At a Monday bond hearing, a judge described Marcano-Marcano as 'a danger to the public' and noted that discarding the weapon interfered with the investigation, as reported by local CBS affiliate WBTV. Authorities identified him as a known member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua with pending warrants in Venezuela. He faces one count of discharging a firearm within city limits and is held on an ICE detainer. As of Tuesday, no murder or manslaughter charges had been filed in connection with the fetus's death.
