North Korea appoints Kim Chol-hae as ambassador to Sweden

North Korea's foreign ministry announced Kim Chol-hae as its new ambassador to Sweden on its website. The appointment follows those of envoys to Britain and Indonesia earlier this week. Sweden has long acted as an intermediary in talks between the United States and North Korea.

North Korea's foreign ministry announced on its website Saturday that Kim Chol-hae has been appointed as Pyongyang's new top envoy to Sweden. The move is part of recent changes in overseas diplomatic postings.

It follows the naming of new ambassadors to Britain and Indonesia earlier this week. North Korea has accelerated such personnel shifts abroad.

Sweden established diplomatic ties with Pyongyang in 1973 as the first Western country to do so and has traditionally served as an intermediary for United States-North Korea talks. It was also the first Western nation to resume diplomatic operations in Pyongyang after the North closed its borders during the COVID-19 pandemic.
