Olivia Rodrigo celebrates fifth anniversary of Drivers License

Olivia Rodrigo is marking the fifth anniversary of her breakout hit Drivers License with a special cover by David Byrne and exclusive vinyl releases. The song, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021, propelled the then-17-year-old singer to stardom. Rodrigo shared her gratitude for the track's impact while teasing more projects for 2026.

Olivia Rodrigo's debut single "Drivers License," released in 2021, achieved historic success as the youngest artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 at age 17. To commemorate its fifth anniversary, Rodrigo has unveiled a cover by David Byrne, the Talking Heads frontman she describes as "one of my all-time heroes." In an Instagram post, she revealed, "David is nothing short of a legend and I actually cried when I heard his version of this song."

Byrne's rendition is the first in a series of covers celebrating the anniversary of Rodrigo's debut album Sour. The two previously collaborated at Governors Ball last year, performing an "electric cover" of "Burning Down the House." Byrne's cover of "Drivers License" is now streaming on all platforms.

Complementing the digital release, Rodrigo announced limited-edition vinyls. A seven-inch pressing on translucent ruby vinyl features Byrne's cover on Side A and a live version of "Burning Down the House" from Governors Ball on Side B. Fans can preorder it on Rodrigo's website. Target offers an exclusive fruit punch-colored vinyl with the original "Drivers License" and its live Governors Ball rendition.

Reflecting on the song's legacy, Rodrigo posted on Instagram: "This song has totally changed my life in ways I still can’t totally wrap my head around. I’m forever grateful for this magical chapter and I can’t wait to scream red lights stop signs with u guys at every concert I play for the rest of my life." In her 2023 Rolling Stone cover story, she expressed the emotional power of performing the heartbreak anthem long-term, comparing it to singing at Stevie Nicks' age.

As Rodrigo eyes the future, she has teased her third album with a glittery red "3" shirt and confirmed studio work. "I won’t say too much, but I think 2026 is going to be a busy year for me," she told Nylon.
