The presidents of Colombia and the United States discussed cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking and Colombia's exit from the OFAC list during a phone call.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro held a phone call with US President Donald Trump on July 3, 2026. The conversation proceeded in cordial terms and covered voluntary eradication of illicit crops.
Petro requested support for Colombia to exit the OFAC list. Trump responded positively and stated he would do his best to achieve that goal. He also committed to dialogue with Colombia's incoming government to reach political understanding with the opposition.
Both leaders discussed the eradication program, which aims to reach 41,000 hectares by the end of 2026, with funding until December 31 of that year. Petro requested collaboration to maintain the crop substitution program.
At the end, Trump thanked Petro and said: "Once I was able to meet you, I could understand that you are a good man". Petro congratulated the United States on its 250 years of independence, celebrated on July 4.
