Phivolcs raises Bulusan Volcano alert to level 1

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised the alert level of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon from 0 to 1 after recording 475 volcanic earthquakes since March 15. The activity signals a return to low-level unrest that could lead to phreatic or steam-driven eruptions.

On March 22, 2026, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Bulusan Volcano's alert level in Sorsogon province from 0 to 1, noting it had entered a period of low-level unrest. The agency reported 475 volcanic earthquakes since March 15, mostly weak volcano-tectonic events linked to rock fracturing at shallow depths under the edifice. Phivolcs stated, 'Most of these were weak volcano-tectonic earthquakes that are associated with rock fracturing at shallow depths beneath the volcano edifice.' Such swarms preceded phreatic eruptions in June 2022 and April 2025. Inflation was observed on the western flank since late January and the southeastern flank since early March. The agency explained, 'Overall, these parameters could indicate that shallow hydrothermal processes beneath the volcano are underway that could lead to steam-driven or phreatic eruptions at any of its summit vents.' Authorities advised against entering the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone due to risks like pyroclastic density currents, ballistic projectiles, rockfall, avalanches, and ashfall. Bulusan had been at Alert Level 0 since February 6. Alert levels range from 0 (normal) to 5 (hazardous eruption in progress). Taal Volcano remains at Alert Level 1 since July 11, 2022; Mayon was raised to 3 on January 6, 2026; Kanlaon was lowered to 2 on July 29, 2025.

Mount Semeru saw increased seismic activity with 32 avalanche quakes over six hours on Thursday morning (20/11/2025). The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) urged the public to avoid the 8 km radius from the peak. The volcano's status remains at Level IV Alert since Wednesday night.

On New Year's Day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology raised the alert level of Mayon Volcano in Albay from 1 to 2. This elevation signals an increasing or moderate level of unrest at the volcano. The change occurred on January 1, 2026.

Mayon Volcano's activity has intensified since early January, with the alert level raised to 3 on January 6—up from Level 2 set on New Year's Day—and a lava dome collapse on January 10 producing glowing pyroclastic flows and lava along multiple gullies. Over 4,000 residents in Albay have been evacuated amid heightened risks.

Tropical Depression Basyang (Penha) weakened into a low pressure area over the Sulu Sea early on February 7, 2026, and fully dissipated by 8 a.m. This came after five landfalls in Mindanao and the Visayas. Though gone, the shear line and northeast monsoon continue to bring rain to various parts of the country.

The Philippine weather bureau PAGASA warns that Tropical Storm Basyang (Penha) will bring moderate to torrential rains to parts of Caraga and Northern Mindanao from Thursday noon to Friday noon, potentially causing floods and landslides. As of 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2026, the storm was located 295 kilometers east of Hinatuan in Surigao del Sur, moving westward at 25 kilometers per hour.

The National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) responded to observations from the Regional Comptroller's Office of La Araucanía regarding deficiencies in monitoring Volcán Villarrica, assuring that surveillance and alerts are unaffected. The agency highlights that the volcano has over 30 operational teams and an online network for real-time data. The Comptroller identified 597 unused teams and outdated emergency plans.
