The NPS statement read: 'Following the alleged discovery of a mass grave within the Makaburini Cemetery in Kericho County, and in line with our mandate, officers from the National Police Service in Kericho promptly visited and secured the scene to preserve the integrity of potential evidence.' The initial report emerged on Saturday when two grave diggers spotted the graves and alerted Kericho Police Station. According to their accounts, unidentified individuals approached the cemetery caretaker earlier in the week. The next morning, they returned in a vehicle and directed workers to dig a large grave. Witnesses reported several bodies arrived in bags and were placed in that single grave. Police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed some witnesses have recorded statements, with more interviews ongoing. Preliminary reports suggest up to 14 bodies. The NPS cautioned that claims are unverified as investigations remain preliminary. NPS added: 'At this preliminary stage, we are seeking to establish the veracity of the claims. Some witnesses have since recorded statements, and efforts are underway to locate and interview more persons of interest in this matter.'
