Ponies' manes and tails cut off at German equestrian event

An equestrian tournament in Munich was cancelled after several ponies were found with their manes, tails and forelocks cut off, and rubber bands wrapped around their tongues. The incident occurred overnight on February 14 at the Olympic equestrian facility. Authorities have launched an investigation into the animal welfare violations.

The Preis der Besten U-21 equestrian tournament, a selection trial for young riders in dressage, show jumping and vaulting, was set to take place in the Munich-Riem district. Organizers cancelled the event for U25 riders following the discovery of the incidents in the stable area of the Olympic equestrian facility.

Wilfried Herkommer, who attended the event with his granddaughter, reported to Equi-Pages that six ponies had their manes and tails cut off, while several others had their tongues tightly wrapped with rubber bands. The attending veterinarian assessed that no lasting damage is expected from the acts. Blood samples from the ponies are being analyzed to check for possible sedation.

Police have initiated an investigation, and security measures at the facility are being strengthened. Thomas Schreder, managing director of the Bavarian Riding and Driving Association, stated, “We will do everything we can to ensure that horses and horse enthusiasts feel as safe as possible and that access is even more strictly controlled in the future.”

Dr. Dennis Peiler, chairman of the German Equestrian Federation, commented, “It is understandable that the public is also affected and demands that those responsible for this act be punished. It is also very important to us that the incidents are fully clarified and appropriately punished. But that is a matter for the investigating authorities.”

The Preis der Besten serves as a qualifier for the nationwide competition in Warendorf, scheduled for May 8-10. The German Equestrian Federation reported the details in a statement on February 17.
