Pave Leo XIV opfordrer til mere humanitet under julemessen

Ved sin første julemesse i Rom opfordrede pave Leo XIV til medlidenhed og fred. Han citerede sin forgænger Benedikt XVI og fremhævede menneskehedens uendelige værdighed. Tusinder af troende fulgte gudstjenesten på skærme på Sankt Peters Plads trods styrtregn.

Pave Leo XIV, den første amerikaner på Sankt Peters trone, fejrede sin første julemesse den 24. december 2025 i Sankt Peters basilika. I en tale til en tætpakket menighed talte han om håb og opfordringen til at være budbringere af fred. Han advarede mod en økonomi, der behandler mennesker som varer, og understregede hver individs uendelige værdighed.

I sin homili citerede paven ord fra Benedikt XVI, som døde for to år siden: «Ikke at tage imod én betyder ikke at tage imod den anden. Hvor der er plads til mennesket, er der plads til Gud også». Han mindedes også sin forgænger Frans, som døde i april og åbnede Det Hellige År i 2024 trods helbredsproblemer. Det Hellige År afsluttes den 6. januar.

Paven opfordrede til en dags våbenhvile i alle globale konflikter, især med henvisning til krigen i Ukraine. Han udtrykte sorg over, at Rusland havde afvist en julehvile. Med hensyn til Mellemøsten håbede han på fremskridt i fredsaftalen mellem israelere og palæstinensere.

Ude i regnen hilste Leo XIV tusinder på Sankt Peters Plads, ønskede dem god jul og velsignede dem, der ventede under paraplyer. Sankt Peters basilika, selvom den er stor, rummer ikke alle, bemærkede han. I Betlehem markerede kristne julen for første gang siden afslutningen på Gaza-krigen og rejste et stort træ foran Nativitetskirken efter to års fravær.

Den 25. december vil paven afgive «Urbi et Orbi»-vælsignelsen fra basilikaens balkon, med titusindvis af troende forventet.
