Quique Llopis claims silver in 60m hurdles at Toruń indoor worlds

Spanish athlete Quique Llopis won silver in the 60m hurdles at the Toruń World Indoor Athletics Championships, Poland, with a Spanish record of 7.42 seconds. Only Poland's Jakub Szymanski, in 7.40, beat him in a tightly contested final. It is Spain's second silver in the event, 41 years after Javier Moracho.

Quique Llopis, 25, from Bellreguard (Valencia), broke his own Spanish record in the 60m hurdles final at the Toruń World Indoor Championships. With 7.42 seconds, he took silver behind Poland's Jakub Szymanski (7.40). American Trey Cunningham got bronze in 7.43, tied with Jamaican Demario Prince per some reports but placed behind. Llopis had set 7.45 earlier in Gallur and Liévin, and ran 7.46 in semis despite first-hurdle issues and a foot injury dragged through three races that day, numbed in the final, as he said: «I'm on cloud nine. We've finally got a world medal that always eluded us» and «Three races in one day. [...] In the final I was numbed and barely felt anything» (to Spanish Federation media). Coached by Toni Puig, Llopis refined biomechanics, video analysis, and starting blocks shifted a handspan to avoid lane invasion. He had placed fourth at Paris Olympics, Tokyo Worlds, and Glasgow indoor Worlds. He ran 7.50 in heats. This medal crowns his consistency at peak form, eyeing outdoor European in Birmingham for 110m hurdles. Colin Jackson praised his potential, noting «it all depends on the start» and split-second margins. It is Spain's second indoor 60m hurdles silver, 41 years after Javier Moracho.
