University of Utah researchers report that iron-rich hemozoin crystals inside the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum move through the parasite’s digestive compartment because reactions involving hydrogen peroxide at the crystal surface generate chemical propulsion. The work, published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, links a long-observed phenomenon to peroxide chemistry and could point to new antimalarial drug strategies and ideas for engineered micro- and nanoscale devices.

Scientists from Georgia Tech and MIT have developed a mathematical model explaining how female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes navigate to humans. The study shows insects respond independently to dark visual cues and carbon dioxide rather than following each other. Findings could improve mosquito traps and disease control.

Dry winters and springs continue to suppress mosquito populations in Sweden. Researchers at the National Veterinary Institute predict another season with unusually few mosquitoes.

Hong Kong will trial a “mosquito-to-control-mosquito” strategy next year, infecting male mosquitoes with bacteria to prevent their offspring from maturing, following the city’s first local dengue fever case in over a year. Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene Donald Ng Man-kit announced the plan on Sunday, saying the government would consider stepping up measures amid a rapid mosquito population rise this month.

Gut bacteria that recycle oestrogens back into the bloodstream are far more abundant in people from industrialised societies than in hunter-gatherers and rural farmers, according to a new study. Researchers found up to seven times greater recycling capacity in urban populations. The findings raise questions about potential health impacts from elevated hormone levels.

A new study of over 2,000 insect species reveals that many tropical insects, particularly in the Amazon, may struggle to adapt to rising temperatures. Researchers highlight limited heat tolerance in lowland species, potentially disrupting ecosystems. The findings, published in Nature, underscore vulnerabilities in regions with high biodiversity.

A new study from the Environmental Working Group finds that consuming more fruits and vegetables with higher pesticide residues, such as strawberries, spinach, and bell peppers, correlates with increased pesticide levels in urine. The research underscores diet as a primary exposure route while emphasizing the health benefits of produce. Findings highlight needs for better monitoring of cumulative pesticide effects.
