President William Ruto has vowed that authorities will hold to account those responsible for the death of gospel singer Rachel Wandeto, who succumbed to injuries from a petrol attack.
Wandeto, a vocal supporter of Ruto and the United Democratic Alliance, was attacked in Mwiki where assailants poured petrol on her and set her ablaze. She sustained about 70 per cent burns and was treated at Kenyatta National Hospital before dying on Monday, May 18, less than 72 hours after the incident.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen visited her on Sunday and ordered police to speed up investigations. He cautioned political leaders against incitement, saying such acts endanger the country.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja confirmed that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had begun work to identify those involved and bring them to court. Ruto stated that the perpetrators would face justice regardless of political ties.
Colleague Karangu Muraya announced her death, noting the urgent need for blood donations before she passed.
