Ryan Fox captured his first major title at the Open Championship on Sunday, closing with a birdie on the 18th hole at Royal Birkdale to beat Cameron Young by one shot.
Fox completed the winning putt in just 22 seconds after his playing partner Sam Burns tapped in. He had prepared thoroughly beforehand to stay ready.
After the round, Fox and about 40 others celebrated in the players’ lounge at Royal Birkdale. They poured red wine into the Claret Jug and drank from it until staff ended the party around 3:30 a.m.
The next morning Fox encountered Young in the British Airways check-in line at the airport. The two were seated near each other on the flight to London, and Fox said Young handled the meeting well.
Fox later recounted on the Subpar podcast that his caddie Dean reminded him he might have only one chance in his career to win a major with a single putt.
