Ryan Gosling recounted missing Tom Cruise's surprise appearance on the set of Shawn Levy's Star Wars: Starfighter. The incident happened on Gosling's only day off during production. Cruise landed a helicopter and filmed part of an action scene.
Ryan Gosling, star of the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter directed by Shawn Levy, shared a humorous story about missing a notable on-set moment involving Tom Cruise. Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gosling explained that he had worked continuously on the film but took one day off, precisely when Cruise arrived unexpectedly. 'I wasn’t there! It’s the one day I’m not there,' Gosling said. He received a picture from Levy showing Cruise and young star Flynn Gray in the mud, prompting his reaction: 'What?' Gosling described how the crew heard a helicopter during shooting, had to cut, and then saw Cruise land in the middle of the set. Cruise then took a camera and began filming the action scene himself. 'It was an incredible moment, and I don’t know why he waited for the one day I wasn’t there. I’m gonna hope that was an accident,' Gosling added, glancing warily at the camera. Levy had previously discussed the event in a New York Times interview from November. He jokingly suggested Cruise operate the camera for a lightsaber duel scene in a muddy pond, and Cruise agreed. 'Now when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom,' Levy said. 'I mean, how cool is that?' Set five years after Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. It was written by Jonathan Tropper and is scheduled for release on May 28, 2027.
