Snoop Dogg teases biopic at CinemaCon with Jonathan Daviss

Snoop Dogg and Jonathan Daviss took the stage at CinemaCon to promote an upcoming untitled biopic about the rapper's life. Daviss, known for Outer Banks, will star as Snoop, with production starting in Los Angeles this summer under director Craig Brewer. Snoop performed snippets of his hits and promised a trailer next year.

Snoop Dogg kicked off Universal Pictures' presentation at CinemaCon alongside Jonathan Daviss, the actor portraying him in the biopic directed by Craig Brewer. The film traces the rise of Calvin Broadus Jr., who became Snoop Doggy Dogg and later Snoop Dogg, from his 1993 debut album Doggystyle with Dr. Dre on Death Row Records to Grammy nominations and ventures into film, television, and collaborations with NBCUniversal, including The Voice and Olympic coverage. Snoop performed snippets of 'Gin and Juice' and 'Nuthin’ but a G Thang,' backed by DJ Green Lantern. He said, “I wish I could give you more details” on the project, adding, “We’ll be back at CinemaCon next year with a trailer.” Donna Langley, chair of NBCUniversal Entertainment, joined them on stage and described the biopic as “the spiritual cousin of Straight Outta Compton,” the 2015 film by F. Gary Gray. Daviss, whose breakthrough came as Pope Heyward in Netflix's Outer Banks, has also appeared in Do Revenge with Sophie Turner and Maya Hawke, as well as Age of Summer and Edge of the World. Snoop is producing alongside Brian Grazer, with Death Row Pictures under their overall deal with NBCUniversal Entertainment & Studios.
