Sony will continue producing physical game discs after 2028 for titles released before that date. The company outlined the policy in a message to developers and publishers. Games launched after January 2028 will be digital only.
Sony told PlayStation developers and publishers they will still be able to place re-orders for existing disc games. The policy applies to titles released or scheduled before January 2028.
The company noted that its blog post on the move would have no impact on earlier releases. Publishers can keep ordering physical versions of qualifying games, though the ordering process itself will change.
Sony has invested millions of dollars to repurpose its disc factory in Salzburg, Austria, for optical microlenses instead. It also plans to offer publishers options to release new games at retail using digital codes.
