PlayStation outlines AI tools to boost game development

Sony executives detailed new uses for generative AI during the company's earnings call on May 8. PlayStation CEO Hideaki Nishino described tools that speed up animation and personalization on the platform. The remarks came alongside forecasts of lower PS5 sales due to memory shortages.

Sony has taken a major financial hit on its bungie acquisition, recording an impairment loss of roughly $765 million for the fiscal year. The charge stems from underperformance by destiny 2 and the new extraction shooter marathon.

Sony AI's table tennis robot Ace has challenged and sometimes defeated professional human players at an expert level. A study published Wednesday in Nature details how it learned via reinforcement learning and performed on an Olympic-sized court at Sony's Tokyo headquarters. The robot uses nine camera eyes to track the ball's spin by its logo.

Sony will eliminate several features from the program guides on certain Bravia televisions starting late May 2026, affecting users of over-the-air antennas and set-top boxes. Channel logos and thumbnail images will disappear, and program information may be limited. The changes apply to models from 2023 through 2025.
