Starmer hints at bank holiday for England World Cup win

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has suggested a possible extra bank holiday if England wins the World Cup this summer. He made the comments after England's win over Mexico and ahead of their quarter-final against Norway.

Speaking at the NATO summit in Ankara, Starmer praised England's performance in their last-16 victory over Mexico on Monday. "It was one of the best England performances I’ve ever seen," he said.

Asked about a celebratory bank holiday if England lifts the trophy on July 19, Starmer avoided firm commitments. "I don’t want to jinx it, but ask me again if we get to the final," he said. The final is scheduled for a Sunday, with the following Friday seen as the likely date for any holiday.

Starmer also addressed his friendly rivalry with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store ahead of Saturday's match in Miami. He noted their strong relationship but added that the two would be on opposing sides for the 90 minutes of the game.
