The HBO Max series Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will premiere on July 23. Co-creators Bill Prady and Zak Penn discussed the show's multiverse premise and its ties to The Big Bang Theory during a set visit.
The 10-episode comedy opens in a dystopian version of the Comic Center of Pasadena. It picks up years after the events of The Big Bang Theory in an alternate universe.
Prady confirmed the series is not canon to the original show. He explained that the characters exist in a different timeline with an earlier point of divergence.
The creators described the tone as a mix of Doctor Who, Black Mirror, and Hitchcock influences. They noted that the characters behave as they did on The Big Bang Theory despite the new sci-fi context.
Production filmed episode 8 in the desert outside Santa Clarita, California, last December. The series stars Kevin Sussman as Stuart along with Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn, and John Ross Bowie.
