A teardown of the latest Tesla mobile app has uncovered code suggesting potential native car key integration with Huawei's Harmony Wallet in China. This development raises hopes for broader support including Apple and Google Wallets globally. Tesla's move follows competitors like Rivian, which recently added such features.
Tesla's mobile app version 4.52.0 contains code references to "Harmony Wallet Key Cards," pointing to integration with Huawei's Wallet on HarmonyOS devices, primarily targeting the Chinese market. This native functionality would allow users to store their Tesla key card directly in the phone's system-level wallet, enabling secure access via NFC for Tap-to-Unlock or Bluetooth/UWB for proximity unlocking, without requiring the Tesla app to run in the background.
Such integration offers advantages over Tesla's current proprietary Phone Key, which depends on the app and can be interrupted by the phone's operating system to conserve battery. On iOS devices, a native wallet key could function even when the phone is powered off, a feature not currently available. Tesla has a pattern of introducing innovations in China, its largest overseas market, before global rollout, fueling speculation that Apple Wallet and Google Wallet support may follow.
The discovery comes amid competitive pressure. In December 2025, Rivian released its 2025.46 Holiday Update, incorporating native digital key support for Apple and Google Wallets using the Car Connectivity Consortium standard. Rivian's system allows keys to operate up to five hours after the battery dies, supports secure sharing via iMessage, WhatsApp, and AirDrop, and enables Apple Watch compatibility without a dedicated app.
Tesla owners have long requested native wallet integration for more reliable vehicle access. Recent app updates also indicate Tesla's growing engagement with Apple's ecosystem, including explorations of CarPlay and Find My-style vehicle tracking. While the Harmony Wallet code confirms Tesla's technical capability, it remains unclear if this will extend beyond China.
