The Japan Meteorological Agency announced Monday that Tokyo marked its first extremely hot day of the year as temperatures hit 35 C, with the rainy season ending in the Kanto-Koshin and Tokai regions.
According to the agency, temperatures reached 30 C or higher at more than 600 of its 914 observation points on Monday morning. Most of Japan was placed on alert for heatstroke on the final day of a three-day weekend.
The rainy season ended about 22 days later than last year in the Kanto-Koshin region including Tokyo, and 23 days later in the Tokai region centering on Nagoya. The announcement came after the rainy season was declared over in the Kyushu region on July 13.
High temperatures are expected in western and eastern Japan this week, with 37 degrees forecast for Tokyo and 40 degrees for Nagoya.
