A new UK analysis reveals that top-grossing films from the past three years are more likely to feature a lead actor named Chris or a talking animal than a woman over 60. The findings come from the Age Without Limits campaign by the Centre for Aging Better. Actor Emma Thompson called for greater representation of aging women on screen.
The study examined the 100 highest-earning films at the UK box office in 2023, 2024 and 2025. It found six films starred an actor named Chris while only five centered on a woman over 60. Films were also four times more likely to feature a talking animal in the lead role than an actress over 60.
